Project Summary / Description:
Terrament builds long-duration energy storage with modular gravity batteries installed deep underground. As our power grid adapts to the intermittency of renewable energy, our energy markets face accelerating demand for long duration energy storage. Today, our market's only viable solution is pumped hydro. Governments and energy utilities are desperate for new solutions which can scale faster and cheaper than Li-ion batteries. Terrament can fill this need and enable renewable energy to scale to 100% of our grid. Terrament was formed in 2020 after the founder (Eric Chaves) identified this dire need to find low-cost, large-scale alternatives to pumped hydro.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Terrament has enormous potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Most urgently, Terrament can replace gas peaker plants to drastically reduce pollution. Removal of peaker plants not only reduces net emissions, it also prevents dangerous health impacts for disadvantaged communities who live near peaker plants. [1] It also saves money. Considering that the LCOE of a peaking natural gas plant runs between $150-$199/MWh [2], a Terrament solution at ~$100/MWh provides a very cost-effective, and feasible solution for decommissioning peaker plants.Data shows that Terrament can save the United States more than a billion Tons of CO2 by 2050. We used a tool called CRANE‚ greenhouse gas emission reduction platform to model our potential impact. Our data is based on their model for pumped hydro since a Terrament installation has very similar properties. The data showed that by gradually phasing out peaker plants in the US, pumped hydro or Terrament could begin saving between 55 and 150 MT CO2 / year by 2030, and up to 550 MT CO2 / year by 2050. The cumulative savings would be about 10,400 MT CO2, which indicates an average of 385 MT CO2 / year. From this baseline we can take some estimates based on Terrament's projected market share. At 1% of the energy storage market: Terrament would save an avg of 3.86 MT CO2 / year for a total of 104.16 MT CO2 by 2050At 5% of the energy storage market: Terrament would save an avg of 19.29 MT CO2 / year for a total of 520.79 MT CO2 by 2050At 10% of the energy storage market: Terrament would save an avg of 38.58 MT CO2 / year for a total of 1,041.58 MT CO2 by 2050. (1.041 billion tons)By replacing peaker plants over the next 27 years leading to 2050, Terrament will save costs and prevent massive CO2 emissions. Our storage can also replace lost generation capacity from decommissioned coal and nuclear power plants. And we will greatly improve the health of the United States‚ most disadvantaged communities and could save billions in environmental and human health-related-damage. According to one study, replacing peakers in New York State alone could save upwards of $360M in environmental and human health-related-damage. Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Diversity and equality are deeply important to me (founder, Eric). I insist on building these into my company DNA from the very beginning, starting with the founding team and early partners. Within our company structure, I understand that building a community or company requires humility, compassion, and careful listening. And I believe that fostering diversity is an invaluable investment even when it‚ not easy. Within our product markets, Terrament has exciting opportunities to benefit and partner with multiple disadvantaged and at-risk communities. Two of the most important of these communities are: 1) Rural or Remote Area communities, and 2) Laid-off Oil and Gas workers who are forced to transition careers away from fossil fuels. 1) As highlighted by the DOE, Rural and Remote Areas of the U.S. face unique risks from climate impacts on fragile grid infrastructure. Terrament's technology is a perfect fit for rural areas. Our storage can improve the resilience, safety, reliability, and availability of energy in their regions. 2) Terrament will provide mining jobs perfectly suited for oil and gas workers seeking career transitions. As expressed by the United Mine Workers of America Union, "Change is coming, whether we seek it or not." Terrament is eager to partner with these communities, to leverage their critical skills, and to work with them to build an exciting new job market for mine workers.
