Project Summary / Description:

The SeaGreen project utilizes large-scale sargassum strandings for the production of compost for regenerative agriculture to generate certified carbon credits. The recent annual inundation of sargassum in the Caribbean (widely attributed to climate change and increased nutrient runoff) is severely disrupting coastal tourism, the fishing industry, and endangering critical ecosystems like coral reefs and seagrass beds. As large-scale sargassum strandings become a recurring stressor, we are witnessing severe consequences for shoreline stability and other ecosystem services, including blue carbon sequestration and storage. Our approach involves removing harmful sargassum and converting it into compost to promote soil building and food security.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

The SeaGreen project strives to advance gender and economic equality through the empowerment of girls and women through community involvement and poverty reduction. Our project offers an integrated approach that provides benefits to local residents and agricultural communities by helping in the creation of alternative livelihoods and increasing decentralized food production for enhanced food security. Our work also includes capacity building efforts aimed at women farmers to enhance technical skills on agricultural practices, as well as the process of commercializing value-added products that can leverage sustainability to garner higher prices in the market (via an eco label in development). This component is of particular importance in the context of the Dominican Republic, where we strive to advance gender and economic equality through the empowerment of girls and women.

Miches is set to become the next high-end tourism destination in the DR, but sadly half of its population still lives in poverty. In terms of agriculture in particular, most small farmers lack the adequate tools to properly manage their fields and tend to overlook safer, more ecological practices to treat their soil and crops, mostly due to little awareness of the environmental and health consequences associated with modern industrial farming practices. Smallholder farmers also face challenges when it comes to organizing to gain better control of the commercialization of their crops and end up selling through intermediaries who keep most of the profit.
