Project Summary / Description:
ThinkBikes was formed with the goal of providing the most affordable, sustainable and efficient transportation solutions for small businesses. Our focus on electric cargo bikes stems from the need to provide affordable last mile transportation for small businesses especially small holder farmers who lose 50% of their produce to transportation challenges according to the World Bank, and to reduce the carbon footprint of transportation and logistics while also improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the same. The incessant hike in price of commodities influenced by scarcity and high price of petroleum is a factor in finding this alternative that is currently transforming and improving the lives of small business owners . Small businesses are the highest employer of labor in Africa and efficient mobility is the driver of this economy and last mile segment is an important part of this sector.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Replaces/avoids GHGs: Our electric cargo bikes replace traditional transportation options, such as gasoline-powered motorcycles, which are significant contributors to air pollution and GHG emissions. By providing small businesses with an eco-friendly transportation option, we are reducing their carbon footprint and avoiding GHG emissions associated with traditional transportation methods.Reduces GHGs: By reducing the number of gasoline-powered motorcycles on the road, our project also reduces GHG emissions. Our electric cargo bikes are powered by rechargeable batteries, and do not produce emissions, thereby reducing the overall GHG emissions in the countries where we operate.Generally:Our electric cargo bike solution is designed to provide small businesses with a sustainable transportation option that addresses the challenges of last-mile transportation in Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana. The traditional transportation options in these countries are not only expensive to maintain, but they also contribute significantly to air pollution and GHG emissions. By providing small businesses with an eco-friendly transportation option, we are reducing their carbon footprint and avoiding GHG emissions associated with traditional transportation methods.Additionally, by reducing the number of gasoline-powered motorcycles on the road, our project also reduces GHG emissions. Our electric cargo bikes are powered by rechargeable batteries, and do not produce emissions, thereby reducing the overall GHG emissions in the countries where we operate. The impact of our project can be measured by comparing the GHG emissions associated with traditional transportation options with those associated with our electric cargo bikes. For example, the GHG emissions associated with a gasoline-powered motorcycle can be estimated using its fuel consumption, while those associated with our electric cargo bike can be estimated using the energy consumption of its rechargeable battery. In conclusion, our electric cargo bike solution not only provides small businesses with a cost-effective, eco-friendly transportation option, but it also reduces GHG emissions by replacing traditional transportation options and reducing the number of gasoline-powered motorcycles on the road.References/CitationCleantechnical report: https://cleantechnica.com/2022/05/31/thinkbikes-nigeria-starts-delivering-its-locally-produced-electric-cargo-tricycles-to-customers/Siemens Stiftung: https://www.siemens-stiftung.org/en/media/news/electric-mobility-made-in-africa-for-africa-five-african-start-ups-receive-innovation-award-for-e-mobility-solutions/Energy Intelligence: https://theenergyintelligence.com/exclusive-with-less-than-25-small-businesses-can-use-alpha-1-0-nigerias-first-locally-made-e-bike/BBC Gist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhCXSw01OgkClimate Neutrality: https://vsc.bike/en/blog/how-cargo-bikes-can-help-achieve-climate-neutralityTransport and Environment: https://www.transportenvironment.org/discover/cargo-bike-revolution-helps-business-and-environment/Forbes: https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbesbusinessdevelopmentcouncil/2022/03/17/the-next-transportation-solution-for-businesses/?sh=5f7796d1652dUniversity of Westminster: https://www.westminster.ac.uk/news/using-cargo-bikes-for-deliveries-cuts-congestion-and-pollution-in-cities-study-findsEPA: https://www.epa.gov/climateimpacts/climate-change-impacts-transportationUnited Nations: https://www.eltis.org/in-brief/news/un-adopts-resolution-promoting-bicycles-combat-climate-changeECF: https://ecf.com/news-and-events/news/united-nations-new-resolution-urges-countries-promote-everyday-cyclingET Auto: https://auto.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/industry/un-adopts-resolution-promoting-bicycles-to-combat-climate-change/90249554
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Thinkbikes Ltd was formed with the purpose of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by providing sustainable transportation solutions for small businesses in Nigeria and other African countries. Our project empowers those who have been traditionally underrepresented in the climate movement by providing them with a cost-effective, eco-friendly transportation option that not only helps reduce their carbon footprint, but also helps improve their bottom line. The traditional transportation options in these countries, such as gasoline-powered motorcycles, are not only expensive to maintain, but they also contribute significantly to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Our electric cargo bikes offer a practical solution that addresses these challenges. Women, who are often the primary caregivers in their families, and who also run small businesses in these countries, are often the most impacted by the challenges of last-mile transportation. By providing them with a sustainable transportation solution, we are empowering them to improve their livelihoods and contribute to a healthier environment for their families and communities. In addition, youth who are often the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, are empowered by our project as they gain access to sustainable employment opportunities through the maintenance and servicing of our electric cargo bikes. By providing these communities with sustainable transportation solutions, we are contributing to their resilience to the impacts of climate change, and to their economic empowerment.

Mission Statement:
ThinkBikes is an organization that provides sustainable transportation solutions to improve the lives of people and the environment. We manufacture electric cargo bikes to move goods and due to high cost of ownership, we lease these bikes for affordable mobility of goods in urban and rural areas using a user friendly mobile app. Our main focus is on creating electric cargo bikes that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase the efficiency of small businesses. Our most recent achievement, the ThinkBikes CoolMAX, is a refrigerated electric cargo bike that can be used in many different industries to preserve perishable goods. We are currently operating in Nigeria with plans to move to other African countries in 2023. ThinkBikes CoolMAX has been recognized by the Royal Academy of Engineering UK and was selected as a finalist in the 2022 Global Top 15 ClimaTech Run.
