Project Summary / Description:
TileGreen's mission is to make highly performing and eco-friendly building materials from plastic waste. Through its state-of-the-art and patent-pending manufacturing process, we were able to produce paving tiles that are more durable and stronger than cement alternatives. Their technology allows for virtually recycling all types of plastic waste to replace many concrete applications effectively, while offering added environmental, functional, and financial value to the market.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
For every 1,000 m2 of paving tiles, we save the environment 3.5 million single use plastic bag, 86 tons of carbon dioxide, and 80-meter cube of water. Below is the logic and math behind, and the references.Plastic bags calculation**Every meter square takes 24 kg of plastic waste to produce (experimental).**Each kg of plastic bags is equivalent to 142 plastic bags with average plastic bag weight of 7 g (https://stanfordmag.org/contents/plastic-bags-to-recycle-or-not-essential-answer#:~:text=But%20let's%20compare%20them%20to,the%20weight%20of%20a%20can.)** the math would lead to 1000 sqm tiles = 3,500,000 plastic bag waste.CO2 calculationWe save CO2 in two ways:**Stopping plastic waste from being burnt. 1 kg of plastic waste= 2.9 kg CO2 (https://www.no-burn.org/wp-content/uploads/Plastic-is-Carbon-Oct2021.pdf )** stopping coal burn by preventing cement alternatives. 1 m2 of cement tiles weights 175 kg, which includes 17.5 kg of cement, which needs 17.5 kg of coal burning, which releases 16 kg of CO2 into the environment. ( https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1755-1315/331/1/012035/pdf)** Adding the numbers up, this will result that 1,000 m2 saves the environment 86 tons of CO2.Water Saving** We save water by preventing the water-heavy process of making concrete. One meter of cement tiles that weight 175 kg consumes 178 L of water. (https://www.the71percent.org/industrial-water-usage/#:~:text=A%20ton%20of%20cement%20consumes%201%2C360%20gallons%20of%20water. )** Through the experimental approach, our process saves 50% of water consumption.
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
By using this low-grade plastic waste into making useful products, we empower Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8) by making more decent jobs in the waste collection sectors. By preventing low-grade plastic waste from burning and landfilling, we make positive Climate Action (SDG 13) and improve Life on Land (SDG 15). By replacing cement-based materials (a nonrenewable resource) and replace them with the renewable resources (plastic waste) we support Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12). Finally, our unique technology is considered a valuable addition to Industry Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9)
