Project Summary / Description:
In July, 2022, Total Hydrogen Corp recognized the need for a streamlined guide for energy investors to apply towards the siting of a green hydrogen production facility for the goal of optimizing overall profitability. This recognition derives from the knowledge of current and forthcoming air regulatory landscapes in states and at the federal level, from the knowledge of sources of greenhouse gas emissions, and from the chemical engineering perspective of electrolyzer process technology. The category of transportation accounted for almost 30% of the US's total GHG emissions (by US EPA's estimation). While passenger cars and small trucks appear better suited to battery power, the payload weights of larger long-haul trucks make fuel cells powered by hydrogen the better powering choice. Green hydrogen availability is practically at zero right now, yet regulatory developments on truck emission standards in California and Colorado are betting on its future ample supply.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The aim of our project is to support and promote the development of green hydrogen production. The end use of green hydrogen that has the greatest environmental benefit is likely that of its use as fuel in hydrogen fuel cell long-range haul trucks. Transportation is now the category with the largest overall contribution to air pollutants with health effects and to greenhouse gas inventories. Long-range haul trucks move through densely populated sections within major US cities on the US's interstate system. Diesel and gasoline trucks emit particulate matter nitrogen dioxide, both of which contribute to ill health effects. Unfortunately, those that live and work in the homes and schools along these interstate sections are often financially disadvantaged,. Transitioning our long-haul trucks that run along US interstate systems, to hydrogen fuel cells, is good for people living along highways. We are a mother and son engineering team, and our project fills a real need for siting information to promote and facilitate the development and production of green hydrogen for transportation uses.

Mission Statement:
While our organization's office is in the Denver area, the focus of the development of our siting guidance will be five US regions. The five US regions of focus are the Seattle metro area, Los Angeles metro area, Rocky Mountain region, Boston metro, and the DC metro area. These five regions are characterized by the serious air pollutant issues due to population density and high volume roadways and highways, and consequently also have state governments that are developing new regulatory programs and initiatives aimed towards reducing transportation emissions.
