Project Summary / Description:
Tudu is a next generation clean energy company with a purpose to improve lives and fight climate change using renewable energy technology to provide clean energy and clean water for millions of unserved Africans. We are philanthropic in nature hence donate a percentage of our profits to build solar water systems and solar internet schools in these off-grid communities where we are providing electricity supply. Tudu was formed to provide solutions to tackling the problem of excessive pollution from petrol and diesel run generators due to Nigeria‚ peculiar problem of epileptic power supply. Our solar home systems which are also assembled locally in Nigeria as opposed to the trend of importing finished products, provide value addition in the technology space while creating jobs for our teeming youthful population most of which are currently unemployed or underemployed. Tudu was incorporated on the 14th of March, 2019 as a limited liability company in Nigeria. We built our first energy hub/micro grid in November 2020 in Dongo community, Ibeju Lekki servicing over 30 homes. In May 2021, we officially opened our second energy hub in an off-grid riverine community called Idi Ori in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Very early we figured out that women and youth will be the major figures in our organization as they are the key drivers of the climate change movement, therefore we choose to empower them. At Tudu, we empower women small business owners in the markets and on popular high streets with Tudu solar home systems which lights up their shops/homes and provides basic power for charging phones. Women and children greatly benefit from the quality of light for household work and studying in the evening. Most families who have become accustomed to the better quality of light cannot perceive returning back to kerosene lamps. With Tudu solar home systems, businesses can now remain open after sundown, enabling longer operating hours hence more income and revenues. Families can now also gain access to education and information, increasing their financial inclusion and opportunities to thrive. Our TUDU solar home systems extend business time up to 6 hours in the evening and this helps bring more customers as well as more income. The better lighting increases the involvement of commercial work such as sewing, shop related business and small cottage businesses. In addition to enjoying the personal benefits of the solar home system each women small business owner empowered also becomes a Tudu Solar Agent earning 2% commission on every solar home system sold through their network. Each agent is given a DC extension box used to charge phones and gadgets for customers. After 6 months of signing up for light and making regular scheduled payments for their solar system, the agent qualifies to get a POS machine that enables mobile money transfers as a third source of generating income. Each small business woman empowered lives a better life with Tudu Solar home systems and earns more income for herself and her family through agency commissions, phone charging fees and POS services. We are improving lives, fighting climate change and helping young mothers earn more income.
