Project Summary / Description:
Growing up with my single grandmother, We never had a chance to own a good house. Our home was destroyed by floods caused by the accumulation of plastic waste, which led to the death of my beloved grandmother. The loss of my grandmother and the realization of the environmental impact of plastic waste became the catalyst for me to start Upcycle Africa. Upcycle Africa transforms Africa‚ plastic waste challenges into employment opportunities for marginalized groups of people while turning plastic waste into products of inherent value. The purpose of Upcycle Africa is to promote sustainable living and reduce waste through the creation of functional and fashionable products from discarded materials. By transforming waste into valuable products.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Upcycle Africa project empowers traditionally underrepresented groups in the climate movement through several initiatives. For example: Women Empowerment: The project trains and employs women from underrepresented communities in Africa to upcycle waste materials into new products, providing them with new job skills and a source of income. Youth Engagement: The project also involves youth from underrepresented communities in Africa in environmental education programs and workshops, teaching them about the importance of waste reduction and environmental conservation. Climate Vulnerable Communities: Upcycle Africa works with communities that are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, such as coastal communities affected by sea-level rise and communities in areas prone to drought. By upcycling waste, the project reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, helping to mitigate the effects of climate change on these communities. Overall, the Upcycle Africa project empowers traditionally underrepresented groups by providing them with economic opportunities, environmental education, and a voice in the fight against climate change.

Mission Statement:
Upcycle Africa protects the environment and promotes an innovative mindset while empowering marginalized women and youth in communities. Through tactile learning, we skill communities in waste management by transforming plastic waste into different accessories, eco bricks reducing deforestation as well as the construction of homes from plastic waste. Plastic bottles are collected and compacted with soil, making the houses cost-effective and affordable, durable, heat resistant, easy to replicate, and providing a source of employment as waste collectors, sorters, etc.
