Project Summary / Description:
CryoSolar is a standalone solar powered cold room. It aims to help people in insulated area or people with restricted access to electricity, to store food insuring less post-harvest loss and a better food security. The idea came to the 2 funders of VALOREM after a business trip in Senegal in 2016. They realised how much food was thrown away due to the lack of proper cold chain infrastructures, and decided to act, with this question in mind How Valorem (a renewable energy producer) could put its skills at the service of the cold production sector). This is after 2 years of R&D that came CryoSolar in the version we know.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)
Best Estimate of GHG Avoidance/Reduction of This Project (Tonnes CO2 Equivalent/Year):
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
CryoSolar directly address the most vulnerable people who struggle to access decent cold storage facilities. CrySolar comes as a response to under investment for electricity access in insulated areas such as islands - which are directly impacted by climate change - or small remote communities who suffer draught more and more. CryoSolar is a reliable and efficient solution for food safety, and better manage food production. In most African countries, over 50% of the fruit/vegetable production is lost due to the lack of cold storage infrastructure. For these under represented communities, CryoSolar can improve food production and safety. In the case of the fishing sector, CryoSolar is directly used by the woman community, who operate last in the chain of fish retail. Thanks to CryoSolar, they are now able to store products overnight minimizing the risk of spoilage or degradation.

Mission Statement:
VALOREM, an independant power producer, is specialised in renewable energies since 1994. They work on the CryoSolar R&D project since 2017. The aim is to increase food security and to avoid post capture/harvest loss due to the lack of cool storage infrastructure in developping countries. With CryoSolar, standalone solar powered cold room, they give access to decent cold storage solution to everybody anywhere in the world, specially in developping countries and isolated areas.
