Project Summary / Description:
Wavelite is a hardware and software based self-powered connectivity solution to be used for internet of things applications. Our hardware solutions include sensor (air quality, wind speed, temperature, and humidity) that are integrated with the Wavelite's wireless tag. The software is a dashboard that can be installed on various computing devices including, laptops, mobile phones, and raspberry pies. The core idea of this project relies on re-using existing wireless signals in the environment to come up with a semi-passive wireless transmission system that is considerably more energy efficient compared with the existing solutions in the market. The main motivation for commercializing this idea is to bring tiny self-powered wireless sensor devices into the market. These devices harvest energy from the environment and reuse the existing wireless signals as a carrier for transmitting data wirelessly. This is while any existing mobile or computer device can be used for receiving the wirelessly transmitted sensor data. All needed is to install our software app on the existing devices. We have already built proof of concept prototypes, we plan to optimize our hardware design for power efficiency and to integrate our carrier-less hardware prototype with energy harvesting units to develop a fully self-powered wireless sensor node. We also plan to extend the range of communication so that our solution can be used in outdoor applications and to enable precision farming.

Mission Statement:
Wavelite‚ mission is to make IoT affordable and scalable. Wavelite‚ technology introduces tiny and battery-free wireless sensors that can be scattered in the environment. These sensors will be capable of monitoring environmental parameters and wirelessly communicating this information to our existing computing devices. Our goal is to maximize resource utilization in the era of global food crisis amongst many other environmental challenges. Power consumption of wireless sensor nodes is a key limiting factor towards battery-free operation of these sensors. Wavelite develops solutions that address this problem by reusing the existing radio frequency waves in the environment, consuming orders of magnitude less power than traditional connectivity platforms. Wavelite wireless sensors not only contribute to resource utilization, they also reduce waste and electricity usage by their battery-free operation. With the upper limit imposed by batteries removed, the sensors can proliferate across areas that battery maintenance is an issue. In agriculture, self-powered sensors could be deposited in the soil and require no maintenance, making it possible to continuously gather data and to optimize the use of resources. These low power sensors could also be used in urban farm and green house settings.
