Project Summary / Description:
The San Diego County Wetland Marine Protected Area (MPA) Restoration Project is restoring 43 acres of degraded wetland habitat surrounding two MPAs in San Diego County, Batiquitos Lagoon SMCA and San Dieguito Lagoon SMCA, that together make up 396 acres of marine protected area wetland ecosystems. This project was initiated as a partnership between WILDCOAST, Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation, San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy, and Nature Collective in Fall of 2019 and has received funds to continue ongoing work through 2024. This project is: 1) helping restore the integrity of natural wetland ecosystems; 2) improving capacity for the wetland systems to respond to climate change and maintain healthy ecosystem functions; 3) enhancing wetland ecosystem resilience to anthropogenic disturbances; 4) enhancing critical habitat for a number of endemic, threatened, and endangered wildlife species that are vulnerable to climate change impacts; and 5) engaging a diverse audience as conservation stewards.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
In addition to restoration activities resulting in enhanced outdoor recreation resources that are publicly accessible to all, the project directly engages students and community members in restoration events. WILDCOAST staff and partners lead restoration events, where community volunteers help remove invasive plants, plant native plants, and water and maintain the restored wetland sites. To date, the project has engaged over 500 volunteers in planting 3,000 plants. Volunteers have included groups from Teen Volunteers in Action, BeWise Young Female Scientist Program with the Fleet Science Center, and students from park poor communities.

Mission Statement:
WILDCOAST is an international team that conserves coastal and marine ecosystems and addresses climate change through natural solutions. To achieve our mission we work in Mexico and California to establish and manage protected areas, protect and restore blue carbon ecosystems, and partner with local communities, governments, and the private sector. The project is restoring two wetlands in North County San Diego County that are part of the 10% of California‚ historic wetlands that remain. Batiquitos Lagoon is located in Carlsbad, CA. San Dieguito Lagoon is located in Del Mar, CA. San Diego County is home to many endangered, threatened, and endemic species that benefit from the restoration activities including California least tern, Light-footed Ridgway's rail, Beldings Savanna Sparrow, Western Snowy Plover, Coast wallflower Nuttall's acmispon, Orcutt's brodiaea, Otay tarplant, and San Diego thorn-mint.
