Project Summary / Description:
Since the 1970s, the WCC has helped develop the concept of sustainable communities. Since the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was adopted in 1992, the WCC has been present at all UN climate change conferences. Over the years, the WCC helped foster a movement for climate justice touching millions of people around the world, including thousands of congregations in 120 countries. In the past these efforts were only aimed at adults. Since 2015 the WCC has developed a new programme in collaboration with UNICEF - the "Churches' Commitments to Children". Commitment 3 focuses on churches efforts for climate justice though engagement of young people and capacity building for children and adolescents (SDG 13.2).

Mission Statement:
Since the launch of the WCC-UNICEF global partnership in 2015 an overwhelming number of WCC member churches worlwide expressed their readiness to support adolescents engaging around initiatives for climate justice through church-run schools, Sunday schools and summer camps. (See summary of requests under Commitment 3 in https://commitments-to-children.oikoumene.org/) The project aims to provide these churches worldwide with tools and know-how to enable effective reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and increase of carbon uptake through youth engagement initiatives, with a focus on influencing policies and legislations change and promoting good practices. https://www.oikoumene.org/en/what-we-do/climate-change
