Project Summary / Description:
In 2015, Steven Rush (musician/composer) and Henry Pollack (geophysicist and author of the book A World Without Ice), were invited to speak in a university undergraduate course focused on creativity in the arts and sciences. An outgrowth of that experience was a collaboration on the subject of Earth‚ changing climate, with special emphasis on how to draw attention in the wider society to the significance of climate change. Michael Gould, another musician/composer with unique experience using ice as a musical instrument, and Marion Traenkle, a talented digital scenographer, soon joined the project.

Mission Statement:
The global climate crisis will not be averted until the technology exists for GHG emission reductions and carbon retrieval from the atmosphere, and people of the world demand a mitigation program from their respective governments. Such popular engagement requires that people recognize climate change as the biggest inter-generational challenge to their family and life-style. However, today in 2018, thirty years after the climate change alarm was first seriously sounded by climate scientist James Hansen, only 12% of voters in the USA named climate change as the first or second most important issue ‚ clearly, the voice of science alone has not been sufficiently persuasive to move public opinion very far. With The World Without Ice Installation -- a presentation part music, part art, part science ‚ we offer a different format of communication, one that speaks to the urgency of addressing climate change, in a completely non-traditional yet compelling voice, both cerebral and emotional.
