Project Summary / Description:
In the last decade, large quantities of Saegassum algae invaded the Caribbean sea, causing an environmental and economic crisis especially when the algae decay and emit large quantities of methane as well as CO2 gases to the atmosphere as well as H2S that has a bad smell. The purpose of the project is to collect the algae in the water before coming to the shores, and produce biogas by anaerobic digestion process, and generate electricity. By this action, we avoid the decay and emitting process of the algae and use it to generate clean energy.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The project includes the following parts: 1. Collecting the sargassum algae before reaching the sandy shores of the region, by putting floating barriers and harvest the algae at the barriers, thus assisting to restore the biodiversity of the coral reefs, and prevent the pollution of the decayed algae close to the beaches. These activities will employ skilled workers instead of the hand collecting activities done by un-skilled workers. 2. The collected sargassum will be transported to the interim storage facility that will be managed by local employees that will be in charge of the restoration and the supply to the biogas production facility. 3. Biogas production facility and the electricity generation will be run by local employees who will learn the technology by Y.A. Maof's experts. 4. An educational environmental visitor center will be founded, to become the connection to the local community and a tool for environmental education. School classes from the entire region will be invited to visit and learn about the environment, biodiversity restoration and possibilities of waste to energy activities. The teachers at the center will be mainly women from the nearby communities that will be trained by UNAPEC and Y.A. Maof's team. 5. In the same time, a further research will be conducted at the coral reefs of the region, to explore more possible reasons for coral bleaching and collapse, other than the algae invasion, searching more ways for restoration and rehabilitation, in collaboration with Israeli experts from the academia ‚ experts in marine life restoration.
