Project Summary / Description:
Due to climate change and its impact on agricultural land, Egypt has lost about 15% of its arable land in the past ten years and the productivity of most of the other lands has decreased. This will lead to expose the country to the risk of food insecurity. So, by planting rooftops, we would be able to compensate for this loss and produce an equivalent amount of crops. We started hapi three years ago in south of Egypt, and we focused on aromatic and medical plants.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Most of the agricultural crops that are grown in Egypt require many workers with daily wages - most of them are women -, and therefore the spoilage of the crop or the low productivity of the land affects the women working in collecting the crops, as the "daily collection fees" is their main source of income for most of the ladies in the countryside in the harvest seasons. We target those women in rural areas who are engaged in collecting crops. In addition to those affected by the land or crop loss, women whose husbands were affected by the loss of the productive capacity of the land, or those who have debts.

Mission Statement:
YLE Foundation is an Egyptian NGO working in the Egyptian market for 10 years. We implement projects all over Egypt aimed at protecting the environment, preserving biodiversity, empowering youth, and spreading awareness and environmental education. We worked in regions and cities along the Nile River and organized clean-up campaigns there, one of which broke the Guinness World Record for the largest clean-up campaign. During the last 3 years, the Nile delta has been affected by climate change, and we lost 10% of our arable land which affects farmers and families who were working in the agriculture field. So, we started hapi as an adaptation solution for land loss. We adopted the concept of "urban agriculture" and developed a farming system that can produce crops with the same quality as the land while reducing the cost of farming and amount of water and energy needed.
