Project Summary / Description:
The Founders, Olou and Kristin met 10+ years ago in Benin, West Africa. Olou had just launched his solar energy company, Focus Energy, and Kristin was working as a US Peace Corps Environmental Volunteer. Kristin supported Olou's organization to scale and develop in its early years. Olou and Kristin have worked on various impact-driven projects together over the years. Inspired while traveling through Mexico in 2021, they put their heads together and designed Zed Motors to be able to tackle the negative impacts caused by petrol-powered motorcycles that are dominating African urban cities today. Zed Motors envisions a carbon neutral world and aims to eliminate transportation related GHG emissions in Africa. Zed Motors locally designs and assembles robust electric 2- and 3-wheelers and offers Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS). Zed Motors batteries are solar-charged and can be swapped for fully charged ones at partner locations.

The transportation sector in Africa is male-dominated. Zed Motors will improve the livelihoods of women by closing gender gaps and providing income generating opportunities. Zed Motors supports and employs women electric taxi/delivery service motorcycle drivers and technicians. Women will be able to sufficiently contribute to their family‚ welfare through being able to pay rent and meet their household needs such as food, clothing, medical care, and other items. Female electric taxi/delivery service motorcycle drivers will defy cultural and societal norms by challenging gender stereotypes (the taxi/delivery motorcycle service sector is male dominated in Sub-Saharan Africa) and be an inspiration for young women.

Mission Statement:
Africa's population will double in size to 2 billion by 2050. Due to this significant demographic growth, there will be rapid increases in vehicle ownership, with more than 80% of the increase occurring in cities. Africa‚ fast growing urbanizing regions have underdeveloped and inefficient road and public transport infrastructures. Faced with unreliable and expensive transportation solutions, African‚ have turned to affordable, mostly petrol-powered motorcycles, which have negative environmental impacts. These local air pollutants have adverse health consequences causing sicknesses and decreasing life expectancy. Zed Motor‚ mission is to lead Africa‚ transition to clean mobility. Zed Motors Inc is a registered Delaware C Corporation and is also registered in Benin and Togo. Zed Motors is currently operating in Benin with its HQ in Cotonou. We have partners and sales and operations also in Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone with plans to expand. Zed's business model is replicable in any country.
