Project Summary / Description:
In response to a request from the people of the Kataba 1 rural commune in Senegal, and in partnership with them and the public authorities, Fondem is leading the CASELEC project to revitalize the area using renewable energies. It aims to electrify 8 localities with solar kits. Access to electricity is not an end in itself, but a springboard for development on many levels: human and economic development, the fight against climate change, gender equality... with CASELEC, it's all there. The project has 4 main milestones: - Install individual solar systems as part of a local ownership approach - Set up an operating scheme based on the involvement of the local private sector - Support the development of productive uses of electricity - Set up a management system for end-of-life equipment

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
CASELEC aims to electrify rural areas in Senegal with renewable energy. A carbon footprint of the project has enabled us to calculate the emissions generated if these localities were electrified by a diesel unit. Over 20 years, the total amount of CO2 emissions would be of 652,8 Tonnes CO2 equivalent. With Solar kits, the CO2 emissions are of 41,36 Tonnes CO2 equivalent over 20 years. Therefore, 611,44 Tonnes CO2 equivalent are avoided during the lifetime of the project.

Mission Statement:
Created in 1990, Energies pour le Monde Foundation supports and promotes access to clean, reliable, and quality energy from local renewable sources, thereby contributing to global poverty alleviation and environmental protection. Fondem focuses its actions where electrification is most needed: the rural areas of Sub-Saharan Africa and other critical countries such as Madagascar. Access to electricity is a prerequisite for development, ensuring the provision of basic needs. Our approach sees electrification as a means to achieve economic and social development, through the support to income-generating activities (IGA). IGA foster dynamism in rural communities while securing stable electricity demand and subsequent revenues for an electricity operator, ensuring a durable electricity supply. Fondem’s projects are usually multi-disciplinary, articulating around energy access (SDG7) several other pillars such as access to water, gender equality or protection of the environment. Fondem acts at all stages of a decentralized rural electrification project, in collaboration with its local partners for the design, implementation and operation of electrical installations. In all its projects, Fondem performs remote monitoring, while all the activities are performed on-site by a local partnered NGO.
