Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
ADES’ unique sales and distribution solution trains and empowers people to become independent resellers and to raise awareness of environmental issues in the communities where they live. Seventy percent of the resellers are women who now have an opportunity to make money for food, health, or medical expenses. In rural households, girls spend almost 400 hours per year collecting wood. ADES’ efficient stoves empower them to allocate time saved for other necessities, such as school. Reducing smoke particles also provides a health benefit for women and children. The World Health Organization has stated that approximately 18,000 women die prematurely each year due to exposure to smoke from traditional cook stoves. Reforestation receives 10% of ADES’ budget, having planted over 550,000 trees throughout Madagascar. ADES funds projects with local NGOs and community groups to help educate them about the importance of their forests. This partnership allows Malagasy people to take the lead with reforestation. In addition to native trees, ADES also plants trees that provide benefits for people. Fast growing trees provide an alternative fuel source while protecting the native forests. Cash crops are also planted to provide food, nutrition, and income, combining poverty reduction with environmental conservation.
