Project Summary / Description:
AkoFresh provides modular solar-powered cold storage, mobile refrigerated transport, market linkage and training to reduce post-harvest losses for smallholder farmers and women traders in Ghana. Our solution extends crop shelf-life by up to 21 days, stabilize food supply, boosts farmer incomes, and reduces emissions from food waste. This project will expand modular cold rooms, solar-powered refrigerated tricycles, and farmer training across new regions, strengthening food security and climate resilience for thousands of rural farmers.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Our project delivers positive environmental impact by reducing food waste, a critical source of methane a potent greenhouse gas. Our model interrupts the waste cycle at its source, preserving food that would otherwise decompose. Utilizing solar-powered cold storage, we displace the reliance on diesel or grid-powered refrigeration, thereby eliminating associated fossil fuel consumption.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
AkoFresh proudly champions the empowerment of women, youth, and vulnerable communities in Ghana, aligning with the triple bottom line accountability framework that considers social, economic, and environmental impacts. In addressing social impact, AkoFresh recruits and trains young women in renewable energy installation and maintenance within each community. These empowered women subsequently assume roles as storage center managers, actively contributing to the upkeep and operation of our technology. We prioritize providing a secure and hospitable work environment, recognizing the importance of fostering positive working conditions. Through our 'train the trainer' sustainable training approach, we've observed an 80% increase in the efficiency of 25 farmers in each community. This has led to a reduction in water usage and soil depletion, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices and environmental preservation. Economically, AkoFresh is transforming the financial stability of grassroots farmers. Previously pressured into accepting low prices for their yield, farmers now experience increased sales by 30-40%. Our solution ensures that crops are no longer wasted, saving farmers significant amounts of money. This concerted effort liberates farmers from the shackles of poverty, creating a positive economic ripple effect within communities. AkoFresh stands committed to holistic empowerment, making strides toward a more equitable and sustainable future.
