Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Indigenous people living around Kahuzi Biega National Park, poor farmer women, youth were selected (during the survey conducted) to be trained on permaculture on how to plant and maintain fruit trees. The training were been organized in the villages where they are living to allow them to participate massively in sensitization and capacity building, the facilitation was made in local language “swahili” to allow good understanding. Pictures and posters on best agricultural practices were shown to the participants. They use the same approach with seed saving, and home-scale fruit tree nurseries. We hear from elders, who help us by offering their experiences and comparisons of how things are today compared with the days of their youth. An elder is chosen to give the conditions he/she/they observed of the community and environment 30 years before. These elders reveal that in the past the environment and forest was in good condition and food was sufficient. This helps the youth see that the solution is to restore our community resource base by planting trees, protecting nature and providing human rights for all. This type of community outreach and sensitization has proven successful in our past tree planting projects
