Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
90% of our global wild-caught fisheries are overfished or fished at the maximum sustainable levels (1). Industrialized commercial fishing is an existential risk to the three billion people who depend on the ocean for food in developing countries, and we will have to produce twice as much protein to feed the global population by 2050. According to the UN FAO, in Cambodia, Sierra Leone, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Ghana, Mozambique and some small island developing States, aquatic foods are >50% of their people's animal protein intake (1). These populations are also disproportionally affected by climate change. A second disturbing aspect of industrialized fishing is the preponderance of modern-day slavery, where its estimated 128K people are victims of forced labor aboard fishing vessels (2). Our technology can allow the scalable, ethical production of seafood to meet the demand for seafood and restore wild fisheries populations to a sustainable level for these people. 1.
