Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
According to researchers of USAID (2023), Madagascar is the world’s fourth most at-risk country to climate change. Moreover, traditional agricultural practices, including slash-and-burn methods, have contributed to soil erosion and reduced fertility. Farmers often have limited access to modern agricultural techniques, hindering their ability to optimize crop yields and diversify farming practices. By definition, there is a strong climate injustice and a great need of resilience in the island and especially rural areas, where 75% of the population is located, including mostly young people and many women. The objective of the project is to empower family farms by implementing strong capacity building around agroforestry and sustainable agriculture through the dissemination of knowledge and practices in agroforestry and agroecology, to create food security. Furthermore, carbon finance could be used in the medium-long term to scale up the project, as in the majority of intervention areas, the dynamics of forest space degradation could make landscape restoration projects eligible for carbon certification. This mechanism is appealing as it enables the mobilization of substantial funding to develop the framework and infrastructure to better enhance the value of local agricultural production (processing units, organization of collections, establishment of cooperatives, etc).
