Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Economically vulnerable, food insecure rural communities in Cross River State as in other parts of Nigeria and West Africa exercise subsistence farming using slash and burn approaches resulting in CO2 and particulate material generation that negatively impact health and global warming. Plantation based, raw materials production for export where finished products are re-imported, further isolates rural communities from globalization benefits. Communities of color and female farmers with deforested land that buffers the 1.6M hectares of forest will be invited to expand their traditional farm towards the government designated 200,000 hectares of land, becoming cooperative partners in sustainable forest management and produce biomass that will be used in biochar production. This project empowers rural farmers with education to use biochar, creates local economies in producing kilns and fertilizer, increases food crop yields and accelerates bamboo growth, also for local processing. Moving economically disenfranchised families from subsistence to sustainable practices, from slash and burn to regeneration, from export contactor to local business provider, alleviating poverty with co-operative profits and staving off hunger with increased local food production. ADC guarantees two revenue sources for farmers by negotiating carbon credit and farm product off takers. (bamboo plus their food crop of choice)
