Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
We supply clean cooking fuel to 4,500 vulnerable households in informal settlements in Kisumu city in Kenya. There are approximately 0.4 million households in informal settlements in Kisumu. 65% of this population use kerosene as a cooking fuel. High poverty rate is a key characteristics of informal settlements. Slum dwellers are composed of low income earners whose source of livelihoods is in an informal sector based on casual labor, small scale trade and artisanal and craft jobs. Average household incomes range from 1-3 $/day, which has to support 3-7 family members. This group cannot afford available clean energy sources. Furthermore, a transition to clean ethanol cooking fuel has clear implications on gender equity. Kenyan women spend up to 4 hours per day on unpaid labor on collecting wood fuel and cooking in polluted kitchens. Adoption of ethanol fuel has time saving advantage for women. The freed up time is used for income generating activities and education. More time is saved on cooking with efficient ethanol stoves. Women have reduced exposure to household air pollution. Owning a non-polluting ethanol stove that rivals LPG has raised women prestige and social status. Furthermore, we have employed 40 women as last mile entrepreneurs.
