CARES was founded by an African American man.  Kramer is also a board member with Green Leadership Trust https://greenleadershiptrust.org/, an organization focused on diversity of board rooms. We created administrative and executive teams with an eye towards diversity, equity and inclusion.  Our treasurer, financial officer and three of our board members are women of color.  We are regularly contacted by the public and private sector to partner on projects because of our diversity.  CARES was invited by ICARE/Key Dives who offered financial support to our youth program to conduct out-planting in Islamorada.  Several of our participants from the U.S. and Costa Rica have become dive professionals and are training to become program instructors. They have taken their training back to their communities to begin teaching there.  Currently, participation in the program is limited by the number of trained instructional staff. DWP-CARES is a community-based citizen science program.  We serve traditionally underserved coastal communities comprised predominantly of African American and Hispanic residents.  Our programs focus is on youth ages 14 to 21 years old.  Participants receive training and education on climate change, data collection and restorative out-planting in hopes of cultivating the next generation of marine scientists.

Mission Statement:

CARES mission is to educate divers about the impact of climate change. We document the health of the coral reef by assessing the presence or absence of key fish, invertebrate, and substrate species. CARES also works to out-plant corals to restore the reef to health.
