Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The most climate vulnerable communities are to be found near the equator where most of todays developing countries are located. These communities are prevalently disadvantaged from an economical standpoint while being the most exposed to increasing temperatures and droughts; as economical conditions rise together with temperatures, the HVAC energy consumption will soar. Heatpumps decrease in efficiency proportionally to the distance between the outdoor temperature and indoor target, the Thermal Shell System reduces the distance by enabling avoidance of activation during the 12h of peak polarisation to minimise the energy consumed by the heatpump extending the impact of heatpump generated thermal energy. The TSS when compared to conventional heating and cooling technologies does not need to be repeated for each floor and room with separate distribution and emission systems, it just requires ducts connecting the air handling unit to the façade cavities, reducing materials employed together with costs and can be retrofitted without displacing regular indoor inhabitability during installation as its impact is limited to the external surface of the façades. In parallel the solution promotes shared economic opportunity by enabling a more equitable and cheap use of shared community renewable energy infrastructure relying on less space, capital and infrastructure.
