Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The Sunshine Scholars: Empowering Zambian Schools with Solar Energy Project is specifically designed to empower students in underserved communities in Zambia--an already relatively poor and less-developed nation. Young people in sub-Saharan Africa understand that education is the primary way they can improve their lives and/or the livelihood of their families. Being able to study longer means they have a better chance of improving their test scores which gives them a better chance of securing a place in university. A university degree means higher wage paying positions, a more comfortable life and a greater ability to support their families. These students are also from communities, countries and regions being disproportionately affected by climate change. Climate change is causing more extreme droughts in many parts of Africa impacting livestock, wildlife migrations and resulting human/wildlife conflict and people's ability to grow food without access to resources like diesel for water pumping and irrigation and the transport of goods.
