Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The P-REC was designed to accelerate renewable energy in communities that are climate and conflict vulnerable, and have low levels of electrification, with focusing on financing high impact renewable energy projects. The initiative aims to create an environment that is conducive to deploying new renewable energy capacity in the hardest-to-reach communities. . Little of the approximately USD $450 billion in annual renewable energy investment is currently reaching conflict-affected countries, which are among the most climate vulnerable and least electrified. Of the 675 million people without access to electricity, 62% live in fragile countries. Most people projected to be without access by 2030 will live in LDCs and countries affected by conflict. EPP's efforts are focused on nearly 30 countries that face overlapping challenges of climate change, conflict, and energy poverty. EPP partners with local renewable energy developers and to-date P-RECs have unlocked USD 1 million in new investment, supporting a range of transformative projects, including first-time electrification, street lights, and hospital electrification. Our pilot data collection has found that P-REC funded public streetlights had a particular impact for women and girls, with the night time lighting enabling them to conduct trade at night and reduce the threat of sexual assault.
