Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Fram Energy addresses inequities in access to clean energy by unlocking the benefits of solar for rental properties, where marginalized communities, including people of color and low-income individuals, are more likely to reside. For too long, renters have been excluded from the home energy transition. >36% of American households are renters, however <0.1% of rental households have access to on-site solar. This is not just an energy transition blocker but also a climate justice issue- renters are more likely to be households of color and have lower incomes. On average, renters in the United States have a 13% higher energy burden than homeowners, so it is unacceptable that this group is unable to access lower energy bills through home decarbonization. Fram’s innovative model realigns incentives by equitably splitting the energy savings between rental landlords and tenants, ensuring that tenants receive a discount on their energy bills. We are also working on features that enable rental tenants to improve their finances, such as building credit score through monthly energy payments and controlling billing frequency. Our solution empowers these communities to reduce energy costs, improve living conditions, and contribute to climate action.
