Project Summary / Description:
Gham Power addresses the two primary sectors affected by the lack of proper access to energy directly. For commercial businesses, solar with financing and zero upfront costs provides organizations with reliable and clean electricity at 20% less. For smallholder farmers, providing solar water pumps, fridges, and grinding mills improves their income by up to 80%. These solutions create substantial economic benefits, reduce reliance on diesel, and curb carbon emissions for communities in a fragile part of the world that is threatened by climate change. All the services Gham Power provides (solar+financing+advisory) are enabled by its proprietary digital platform that is built for project development, monitoring, and automating agri-advisory services for precision farming. The precision agricultural data collected has immense value in providing data-driven services. This integrated solution allows farmers to increase their yields by up to 80%. Gham also operates in some of the most geographically challenging areas of the world where users are accessing these services for the very first time, reducing inequality and providing greater economic opportunities.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Gham Power operates where Mount Everest and the Himalayas provide clean water for nearly 2 billion people in South Asia, but the region is also facing a severe climate crisis. Diesel, which is widely used to address Nepal’s poor energy infrastructure, is a major contributor to black carbon which is increasing the speed of Himalayan glaciers melting and causing rapidly deteriorating air quality in the country. Through its reliable, affordable, and innovative solar power solutions, Gham Power has deployed over 5000 projects in remote Nepal which has impacted 32,000 lives, displaced over 12,550 kilo liters of diesel, and curbed 33,640+ tonnes of CO2 emissions. In the next 3 years, Gham Power will deploy an additional 10 MW of projects which will help avoid 200,000 tonnes of CO2 per year primarily by reducing diesel use. Additionally, we extend our support to rural smallholder farmers beyond solar-powered solutions and offer the farmers digital agri-advisory services. These services provide tailored advice to promote climate-smart agricultural practices. Through our data-driven support system, we assist farmers in enhancing their agricultural methods sustainably and optimizing fertilizer usage. As a result, farmers can reduce carbon emissions by 2.5 to 4 tonnes per hectare per year. To date, we have 11,000 ha of land under management which will further help reduce the CO2 emissions in the agricultural sector.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The upper-northern part of Nepal with a wide range of Himalayan mountains - the more majestic it sounds, the more vulnerable it is to climate crisis. It is a home for a sparse population and minority groups which is feminized due to the major problem of emigration. Hence, we work predominantly in the Himalayan region, majorly with ethnic minority groups aiming to enhance diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) as an integral part of our mission surrounding global climate stability. Moreover, we provide sustainable irrigation systems along with easy access to finance and climate-smart agri-advisory services to rural farmers residing in climate-vulnerable areas through the digital app, with which they gradually shift to modern farming and boost their farm yield sustainably. Besides, we also conduct capacity-building programs for local microfinance institutions that finance our solar pumps, which women predominantly run.
