Charcoal and firewood fuels are still used in 70 percent of Sub-Saharan Africa, resulting into deaths of 4 million people annually and depleting natural forests and indigenous trees, in turn resulting into erratic rainfall patterns and contributing to climate change and its related calamities. According to FAO, more than 70% Ugandan are smallholder farmers. This smallholder farmers are amongst the poorest people in the world. Ironically and tragically, they are also the people who most often suffer the effect of climate change. 37.5% of the population lives below the poverty line of 1.25 dollar per day. The local kiln fabricator earn a living by fabricating each kilns for us at $35. We work with 600 char producers who are especially women and young adults earning a total income of close to $95,000. Currently we are employing 15 permanent workers who are mainly young adults, 45 temporary workers who are called on demand. We have a network of about 300 briquette vendors who are our main outlet helping us reach 3,000 households and are 95% women. Our business at the same time help these community members 85% women meet the need for cooking fuel as our first line of consumers.
