Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Project implementation is in Sabah, Malaysia’s state with the highest incidence of absolute poverty and where nearly 60% of the population are Indigenous peoples who are traditionally marginalized in the climate movement. Our model for electrifying villages promotes a community-led approach where participants are provided with resources and capacity-building to establish community-owned renewable energy mini-grids (C-REM). The project process and design of these technologies pay attention to the beliefs and culture of Indigenous communities, and engage community members in all levels of decision-making. We provide training in renewable energy systems, financial management of micro-utilities, and environmental conservation while promoting women and youth leadership to advance full community ownership of C-REM. The project supports the democratization of developing energy access solutions by strengthening local capacity to manufacture, install, and repair clean energy technologies. We specifically designed SGSG technology to be open-sourced, enabling communities and energy practitioners in constrained, remote settings to modify it or add features with the resources available to them. This facilitates planned and emergency repairs, keeping system downtime minimal. By making our technologies easily accessible, we want to demonstrate that energy access innovation can spring from community-centric design, inclusive of people who strive for it the most.
