Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Unreliable electricity contributes to vaccine spoilage, interruptions in using essential medical equipment, and a lack of even the most basic lighting and communications for maternal delivery and emergency procedures. According to UNICEF, in Nigeria, Infant mortality is at 69 per 1,000 live-births while for under-fives it rises to 128 per 1,000 live-births. Also, Nigeria contributes 10% of global deaths for pregnant mothers. Without access to energy, health centres cannot deliver timely, quality healthcare services to patients. This is particularly vital for pregnant women in rural and peri-urban communities reliant on PHCs. The current infrastructural deterioration and absence of proper cooling facilities for vaccinations have resulted in healthcare workers using torchlights, candles, or kerosene lamps to deliver babies in the middle of the night, and the statistics above show the result of these practices. Our project provides solar-powered solar systems with battery storage and internet connectivity to PHCs in rural and peri-urban Nigeria serving women and children. It empowers the underrepresented by improving health outcomes, bridging healthcare gaps in remote areas through telemedicine and e-learning, and powering cooling for vaccines, reducing spoilage. This addresses climate-related illnesses, potentially reducing maternal and infant mortality while improving child health.
