Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
We empower traditionally underrepresented groups in the climate movement - women, in particular. In Nigeria's small-scale fisheries, most people engaged in post-harvest activities are women, albeit often in the lower-paying and hazardous jobs, such as, post harvest sales and the preparation of smoked fish products where working conditions and air quality are poor. Women also play crucial roles in the harvest of other aquatic foods like oysters, periwinkles, clams, and cockles, primarily in the nutrient-rich Niger Delta region. These foods are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B-12, essential for nutrition and health, yet their harvest is threatened by environmental factors such as water and air pollution from oil and gas companies. Indigo’s interventions ensure that youths and women have access to finance for production activity, purchase of feed, fingerlings and table size fish. Our training sessions on efficient aquaculture practices also build the technical capacity of youth and women in rural communities. This helps to reduce losses and waste, thus increasing supplies and potentially improving nutritional and financial gains for the farmers. This is particularly relevant considering that significant portions of fish like catfish, tilapia, and Nile perch are lost during the production, processing, and marketing stages.
