Water-stressed populations are usually low-income, marginalized communities that have historically been excluded from centralized goods and services; water precariousness disproportionately affects women and young girls, since they are usually in charge of providing water for their families, which keeps them from engaging in educational and economical activities. Women and children are included in the social and decision-making processes that lead to the installation of the RWHS, and, by providing access to safe water and promoting water justice, RWHS can partly relieve women from this task, and impact gender equality, as well as social inclusion.
Another positive effect is that RWHS can help families to be more resilient against the increasingly negative impacts of climate change. These impacts have led 84% of the country, including Mexico City, to be on drought alert.
In a situation where water demand is increasingly complicated to be satisfied by conventional water sources and methods of supply, and the latter is demanding more energy and resources than those the government can provide, having an alternative low emissions water source such as harvested rain, allows families to lower their expenses while reducing their water stress during the rain season.
