Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The project area is in the dry zone, where most farmers rely heavily on rain to cultivate their crops. Unfortunately, in this region, droughts are frequent, and crop failures are all too common. As a result, many farmers have been forced to abandon their land, leaving it unplanted and unproductive. Some have even been forced to migrate to urban areas for alternative livelihoods. However, in recent years, some farmers have begun to explore the possibilities of dry land horticulture, which can provide them with a steady source of income within 3-4 years of planting. This approach has proven to be a viable model, particularly for vulnerable communities and women. Agroforestry has emerged as one of the region's most promising options for promoting dry-land horticulture. Farmers can create a sustainable and diverse agroecosystem resilient to drought and other environmental stresses by planting a combination of trees, shrubs, and crops. This approach helps farmers increase their income, improves soil quality, prevents erosion, and promotes biodiversity. Overall, promoting agroforestry in the dry zone is a crucial step towards ensuring food security, reducing poverty and mitigating the effects of climate change.
