Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
"Electricity is among the world's most stolen commodities, and very rampant in most Sub-Saharan African countries. In Uganda, it is estimated that 80% of people in Uganda have no access to electricity despite the country's high generation capacity. This is attributed to losses through theft and illegal use, transferring the burden of high tariffs and instability of the grid to the general population. Umeme Limited is Uganda’s leading power distributor serving more than 80% of the country’s electricity users. Umeme reported 17.9% in power losses as of 2021, with each percentage loss point equivalent to $500,000. More than 70% of this loss is commercial, attributed to electricity theft and vandalism. Stakeholders include UMEME, government agencies like ERA, UEDCL, and Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development. Our project will use IT/OT technology and integrates AMR software " Our project therefore reduces the cost of the tarrif last mile to the final user who are majorly underrepresented members of the community. With potential reduction of tarrifs, then there is opportunity for wider access to the grid.
