This project is directly aimed at rural farmers grazing animals on communal lands (ie without land tenure). These individuals are some of the poorest and most vulnerable members of our society as the land they are dependent on is often degraded, their livelihood is often adjacent to protected areas, increasing the risk of loss to predation and zoonotic diseases from wildlife, and they have no access to credit or the ability to meet formal market requirements on their own. By forming a collective Trust of farmers that own the business that can provide flexible but consistent market access, Meat Naturally provides significant new income generation opportunities and through the improved environmental and livestock management also enhances livelihood security. The business has also developed a mobile wool-shearing model that provides income to poorer farmers or female-headed households that do not own cattle, but only sheep. This initiative is generating huge empowerment opportunities by providing passive cash opportunities for women who, as child care providers, struggle to participate in formal employment.

As part of ensuring the sustainability of our mission, we also seek to promote and develop low-carbon red meat value chains that build resilience in markets for communal farmers and prevents high-emissions livestock production in Africa.
