Project Summary / Description:
We solve the problem of food spoilage. In developing countries, around 50% of all horticultural products are lost or wasted before reaching the consumer, intensifying poverty, hunger and malnutrition. The high rate of post-harvest losses is due to the lack of affordable cold storage at key points in the food supply chain. Humidity, ambient temperatures and poor handling cause fruits and vegetables to deteriorate. We offer GreenBox™️, a 100% solar cold room installed in agricultural groups, horticultural product grouping centers and outdoor food markets. Hubs are used by small farmers, retailers and wholesalers, to store and preserve fresh fruits, vegetables and other perishable foods 24/7, extending their shelf life from 2 days to 21 days . GreenBox™️ uplifts humanity by completely eliminating food spoilage due to lack of cold storage, increases income for farmers and sellers, and makes safe and nutritious food available for local consumption.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
We help reduce carbon emissions from food waste the solar cold room we installed reduces up to 16.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions every month. From 2,400 tonnes to 20,700 MT of fruits and vegetables checked for deterioration. GreenBox ensured the safety of 20,400 tonnes of food, eliminating direct exposure to sunlight, chemical, bacterial or parasitic and mycotoxin contamination, making these safe and nutritious foods available for local consumption. 24 GreenBoxes saved around 462,528 kg of CO2 Each solar cold room we install reduces up to 16.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions every month. This means that with five of our preservation units in operation, we are saving more than 10,080 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year in a single community, helping to achieve a carbon-free world. The impact increases as we grow and expand into new communities.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
To date, the mobile freezers have successfully served around 3,000 smallholder farmers, 80% of whom are women, and reduced post-harvest losses by 95%. Thanks to GreenBox™️, farmers were also able to increase their income by up to 150%. Now they sell products at optimal prices instead of selling desperately for fear that their food will spoil. This access to cheaper fresh food has also reduced malnutrition among consumers at the bottom of the pyramid. Additionally, the GreenBox™️ project participated in the mentoring and training of 500 young women in the field of renewable energy. Through a program called “Teach One Each,” they provide rural youth with practical design and technical skills. They teach them how to use, maintain and repair equipment, like the GreenBox™️, powered by renewable energy for agriculture. SDG 2: Zero Hunger – Before the introduction of the tricycle, small-scale horticulturalists said they often left much of their produce at home, unable to transport it to market. By using the tricycle, some small horticulturists have almost tripled their production. SDG 5: Gender Equality, 172 women were trained to ride the tricycle, improving their daily livelihoods. Some have found new jobs as transportation and logistics drivers. The intervention involves installing and commissioning 20 ColdHubs (measuring 10 feet in length, 10 feet in width and 7 feet in height) each containing and cooling 3 tonnes of food per day, in 10 food production and consumption clusters high potential of Congo. to serve 3,000 farmers and sellers, 100 users per hub. The change in the market system is that small farmers, retailers and wholesalers will have access to cold storage to store their harvests of fresh fruits and vegetables once they are picked from the fields and also once they reach the market outside. Improving access to growth through this system will allow small farmers to maintain the quality of their fresh fruits and vegetables stored in GreenBox for 21 days or more, while waiting for the truck to pick up the harvest. the external market. They will not sell their harvest to middlemen to avoid spoilage because the quality will be maintained in our temperature-controlled room for a long time, they can haggle on prices and sell later when prices rise. The improved access to growth of this system for the wholesaler and retailer is that the hub acts as a warehouse, once the truck arrives in the external market, thus providing them with the opportunity to store and to maintain the quality of their fresh fruits and vegetables for as long as possible. If possible, allow them to haggle over prices and sell later when prices rise. It also maintains the quality of their unsold and leftover evening fruits, vegetables and other perishable goods for more than 21 days, once transferred inside the hub, after exposure outside. The change that will result from the intervention will increase the income of 3,000 users by 50%, providing US$60 of additional income on the current estimated income of US$60, for a total of US$120 per month. This objective will be achieved by simply eliminating the 50% of fruit and vegetable losses due to lack of storage.
