Mwani Zanzibar was founded in order to bring widespread benefits to our community at every stage of our operations. Our team of women artisans earn over 900% more than than independent farmers in the industry and enjoy full employment benefits. 

Unlike a majority of brands in the skincare industry that outsource production, Mwani Zanzibar intentionally structured its operations to retain all production in house, to create jobs locally, despite challenges such as higher costs, infrastructural obstacles, and governmental hurdles, we remain steadfast in our commitment.

From the inception of the project, each woman seaweed farmer has undergone a five-year training period, whilst earning a living wage. The team that was with us at the start, is still with us today. This process is essential as women from the underserved communities, do not have access to education past primary and they are the first women in their communities to gain independence and work. Notably, they are the breadwinners in their families and several of the women have built their own homes to secure their future, as men can marry several wives. This has created a ripple effect in their families, with the first girls have been sent to university.
