MAHAKAM project demonstrates a strong commitment to the inclusion of underrepresented people in the climate movement. Focusing on the Mahakam Ulu Delta and Adang Bay, Indonesia, the project takes a holistic approach, with a focus on women's empowerment within these communities.
 An in-depth social analysis carried out in 2019 in Muara Kembang identified precisely the specific roles, responsibilities, needs and interests of women and men. This understanding guides the project's initiatives to promote gender equality. Concrete measures are being put in place to actively encourage women's participation, including through meetings, equitable opportunities in capacity-building activities, and economic opportunities through micro and small enterprises.
The collaboration with the Gender Equality Working Group at the provincial and district levels demonstrates the commitment at all levels of governance. Specific actions, such as the identification of favourable moments for women's participation and the creation of spaces for expression free of cultural constraints, are implemented to ensure equitable representation.
 The MAHAKAM project goes above and beyond by recognizing the rights of local populations through the application of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC). This approach positions local communities as active subjects of the project, strengthening regional governance and ensuring meaningful representation of the whole community.
