Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The Engineering Department at Monash is one of the most equitable in Australia. Over the past 18 years, while supervising more than 80 PhD students, I have continuously promoted the work and profile of female engineers in this male-dominated field. Proudly, in a profession where women traditionally represent 20-25% of the workforce, over 50% of our current PhD cohort are women. This diversity has reaped significant rewards. In recent years, our female PhD students have been responsible for several global ‘firsts’ in the minerals industries – including technologies for fracturing rocks deep underground, recovering geothermal energy, and – now – a ground-breaking zero-carbon cement. These projects have generated partnerships with some of the world’s leading engineering institutes and laboratories (Cambridge University, Imperial College) as well as multinational resources companies (BHP, Woodside) that are helping to commercialise our inventions. In 2018, we launched a special program to promote the carbon-reducing projects of our female graduates. FRESH (Female Resource Engineers Shaping Horizons) focuses on nurturing the creativity and instinct of women to shape a healthier future – particularly in emerging fields of carbon sequestration, recycling, and energy harvesting. The program’s graduates have created several global innovations and won numerous fellowships and awards.
