Two key solutions provided through our project are Safe Water Services and Electric Cooking.  At present, there don’t seem to be affordable community safe water services available for low-income and low-resource communities.  Sand filters are suitable for individual households, but not communities, while Reverse Osmosis and Ultrafiltration have high power requirements, so can be expensive to install and so unaffordable in rural communities.  Most rural communities that do not have piped-in water have to spend a considerable amount of time collecting water.  The water then may need to be boiled using firewood, which also has to be collected.  The main burden for collecting both water and firewood falls on women.  Moreover, boiling the water, especially in indoor kitchens produces smoke and black carbon, which adversely impacts the health and well-being of women and children.

Similarly, traditional cooking also requires the burning of firewood and charcoal.  As people cook daily, the cost, both financial and personal, to collect firewood and pay for fuels, including charcoal, especially in lower-income urban communities is significant.  In Kampala, the capital of Uganda, more than 90 percent of households still use traditional fuels for cooking, with the greatest impact, again, on women and children.
