In Bangladesh, electric three-wheelers (E3Ws) predominantly rely on dirty fuels and low-quality lead-acid (LA) batteries. These batteries are energy inefficient, require long hours to charge, typically 10-12 hours overnight, last 9-12 months and are purchased by drivers on loan cycles of 6-9 months at interest rates of up to 360% leading to debt traps for drivers. The slow-charging and high energy consuming batteries worsen peak load issues on the grid. SOLshare, driven by innovation, sought to improve driver livelihoods through access to better financing mechanisms and better technology. By creating smart technology for batteries integrated with mobile money (PAYG) SOLshare worked with battery manufacturers to integrate our tech into lithium-ion (LI) batteries. Requiring 50% less time to charge, consuming 40% less energy, and having longer life spans (5-7 years) these batteries were optimal for the EV market.  Through SOLmobility, drivers are able to earn a higher income using smart batteries on better financing mechanisms provided by our partner Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) bringing drivers out of debt through asset backed finance.
