Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
We prioritize the needs of disadvantaged and underrepresented communities in all of our climate policy work. We partner with environmental justice (EJ) groups across the state and believe working in coalition with community-based organizations are essential to securing a climate-safe future for all. Relationships with such organizations must not be symbolic or transactional but deep and reciprocal. Building these ties and correcting a historic divide within California’s environmental movement takes time, and we are committed to this task. For example, we convene the Microgrid Equity Coalition that meets bi-weekly and together secured $200 million for the California Public Utilities Commission’s (CPUC) Microgrid Incentive Program, providing funds to develop clean energy microgrids in disadvantaged communities. We also secured $30 million for community engagement from the CPUC. Our approach to improving resilience in underserved communities integrates EJ insights and incorporates community input. EJ groups must be at the table in the design, planning, advocacy, and implementation of any policy around community energy resilience. Our campaign is only successful with the involvement of historically underrepresented groups who can speak from experience about the importance of energy resilience and take an active role in designing policy solutions that work for their communities.
