Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The recent census of Southern Illinois (SI) reported that 1.2 million people live in rural towns and cities separated by extensive farmland. Jackson county has a 25.7% poverty rate with 28.9% of children raised in poverty. In the past coal mining was the main source of employment and the primary industrial product of SI. Now the current major industries of SI are agriculture, animal husbandry, and education. The OHD technology is simple and can be available to recycle all waste biomass and generate an inexpensive biostimulant right now with no waiting for future technologies to be developed. People of all incomes and demographics, especially those living in SI that have been heavily impacted by the loss of coal mining, would benefit from this technology. OHD biostimulants derived from biowaste directly cleans up the environment and supports agriculture, while also stimulating the economy. Concurrently as people from the community are hired and students recruited, we will be training the next generation of OHD specialists. This expertise will expand the influence of this paradigm changing technology, allowing all underserved communities to close carbon loops, enter a new economically profitable industry, and help fight climate change.
