The Seaweed Company, operating in Ireland as Green Turtle, is the major seaweed supplier for SeaMeat. Our farm is situated in a remote marine inlet called Mulroy Bay. We prioritize fair pay for non-permanent employees involved in seeding and harvesting, offering wages above Ireland's minimum wage. This boosts employment in a remote part of Ireland which has limited economic activity. Notably, women hold leadership roles in our permanent Irish staff, with Lorraine Gallagher as General Manager and Aoife O'Sullivan as Cultivation, Marine Monitoring, and Quality Lead. https://www.linkedin.com/in/lorraine-gallagher-3b7b0b29/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/aoife-o-sullivan-8b074a11a/ Proceeds from SeaMeat sales fund the expansion of seaweed cultivation in the Global South, particularly in India's western Gujarat (Kutch), an economically limited region. Our focus is on replicating the successful Irish model, emphasizing employment in remote coastal areas. In India, we address the lack of skilled labour by training local fishermen in collaboration with authorities, supplying them with materials to establish small seaweed farms. Following their training, we buy seaweed from these newly skilled farmers at a rate slightly higher than the market price. This enables them to diversify their income from the unpredictable small-scale fishing industry to a more stable and dependable seaweed aquaculture.
