Project Summary / Description:
Development financing is the current bottleneck to unlocking NBS supply. Lack of data to elaborate reliable carbon projections is a major barrier for investment. To solve this, we began our restoration lab back in 2022 in the heart of the most accessible and deforested hotspot in Peru, Pucallpa. We set up our 50-hectare pilot as a lab for conservation purposes. Here we experiment with forest model experiments that optimize carbon sequestration and biodiversity with mixed native species whilst minimizing cost. Our objective is to scale our formulas by partnering with native communities and smallholder farmers by restoring +10khas.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Carbon sequestration will be achieved by planting mixed native trees on previously degraded land of small holder farmers using innovative forestry practices. We are currently evaluating the optimal combination of tree species, spacing and technological level for carbon sequestration and biodiversity at minimal cost. When collaborating with smallholder farmers, we will provide technical assistance and capacitation with the help of Reforesta, the team’s field operator, to employ suitable practices. We are developing a carbon certification application that will allow us to sell carbon credits in the voluntary carbon market, opening the doors for the full-scale project’s revenue.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The Human Development Index ranks income per family as the lowest indicator for wellbeing in Ucayali; there’s a 39.2% poverty incidence in the rural jungle of Peru (Pobreza 2022, INEI). On average, smallholder farmers have a 3-5 hectare plot of land of which 1-2 hectares are unproductive and degraded. Our flexible model is suited for diverse land conditions, allowing local communities to earn income from their underutilized land. Our approach matches their current opportunity cost of $80/ha/yr. from productive land as a fixed lease over 30 years plus revenue sharing from spot credit sales adding up beyond $100/ha/yr. in total. As a result, their total income is expected to increase by around 80%. We will not purchase land. We’ll be actively collaborating to develop an inclusive, fair and realistic agreement regarding the role of each player. Indigenous community Shipibo Conibo leaders have seen our project onsite and expressed interest in participating with 2000 eligible hectares that are already eligible (see recommendation letter attached). Reforesta is led by women. 4 out of the 6 people in leadership positions are women. This is creating a more inclusive environment that integrates the perspective of women in decision making.
