Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The 30,000 people being targeted are the poorest of the poor who live in some of the most remote regions of Burkina Faso. The vast majority (>85%) earn less $0.42 per person per day, significantly less than the globally recognised $1.90 per day extreme poverty line. Burkina Faso and the Sahel region is particularly vulnerable to climate change, with more frequent incidences of chronic droughts, flash floods, windstorms, and disease outbreaks. Recent bouts of insecurity have exponentially multiplied the challenges faced by these communities. It is often women and girls, representing 52% of the population, and children under 15, representing 45% of the population, who are most vulnerable to these challenging realities. According to UN Women, 80% of households that are water-deprived place the burden of water collection on women and girls, which is why Uduma puts in place measures to actively empower them and address this injustice. We do so by prioritising the recruitment of women as attendants at water points, training women with transferrable skills, and including women in all decision-making.
