Supporting NGOs and frontline communities that are fighting fossil projects – be it an oil pipeline in Uganda, a coal mine in Bangladesh or new LNG terminals on the US Gulf Coast – is a key part of Urgewald’s mission. We help NGOs identify the financiers of these projects, offer advice on how to derail their financing and help local campaigners secure meetings with foreign financial institutions and journalists or arrange proxies for them to speak at the AGMs of relevant financial institutions. Urgewald also runs an online Finance Campaigner School (FCS), which has trained 50 NGO campaigners from 36 countries over the past two years. The FCS is a free six-month course and many of its participants are from the Global South. In weekly sessions, campaigners and activists receive training in financial literacy, meet finance professionals who provide them with an insider’s view, and learn how to campaign on specific types of financial institutions ranging from development banks and export credit agencies to insurance companies, asset managers and commercial banks. The training is very hands-on and participants regularly meet with experienced mentors, who help them think through their campaign goals and strategies.
