Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our project will help amplify the voice of the “global south”, particularly Africa. We are located in Eswatini, a country of a million people in Southern Africa. We bring together students from more than 60 nations, 80% of whom are from a variety of African countries and 60% of whom are girls. Through the educational components of our project, we will: - Share our campus as a center for experiential learning about sustainability and science in a country that lacks such resources; and - Develop and share educational curricula designed to enhance understanding of environmental issues—thereby motivating young people to be more involved in their communities, countries and globally. In this way, our sustainability infrastructure will be used to educate and inspire thousands of students from around the country, who may then initiate projects in their schools/communities. Further, through the Davis Scholars program (https://www.davisuwcscholars.org/), each year approximately 100 of our students attend university in the US at little or no cost to them. Consequently, African students who leave us passionate about climate change have a tremendous opportunity to expand their knowledge, experience and connections and to chart a course of impact.
